Bodrum Resort Description

The craggy Bodrum Peninsula is an area of stunning diversity, where simplicity and sophistication jostle side by side whilst tranquillity and vitality are never more than a few miles apart. Bodrum itself offers all the attractions of a large, cosmopolitan town, set apart from lesser Turkish resorts by its stunningly beautiful setting, its tangible sense of history and its delightfully bohemian air.

Bodrum's whitewashed buildings snuggle up against the hillsides that rise above two semi-circular bays, separated by the imposing castle of St Peter. Restaurants catering for every taste line the picturesque harbour where the masts of traditional wooden gulets sway gently. The old town, with its narrow lanes, is a delight to wander in, not least for shoppers who can find some amazing bargains, from leather goods to local herbs and spices and from fashionable casual wear to traditional carpets and kilims.

Given Bodrum's unabated popularity, it comes as a surprise to find many parts of the peninsula almost untouched by tourism. Just the shortest of drives inland lie villages which remain blissfully unaffected by the intrusions of modern life; even the coastline still reveals several unspoilt backwaters.

The perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of Bodrum is Gumusluk, a charming village of flower-bedecked houses which follow the curve of a small and pretty bay, erected on the site of Myndos, a classical city once powerful enough to mint its own silver coins. Myndos' glory was eclipsed centuries ago but fascinating fragments of the past add poignancy to the beach, sheltered water, fabulous views and irresistibly relaxing atmosphere.

Unreached by road until relatively recently, Gumusluk became a sleepy backwater used by fishermen and vessels trading in the famously delicious mandarins and lemons of the Bodrum peninsula. The waterfront houses which stored the fruit have now been converted to simple holiday homes, perfect for those who want to idle their time away in an idyllic setting.

Myndos has not been excavated but the old city's importance means that no new buildings are allowed, thereby preserving the village's unique charm. Strolling around the head of the beautiful natural harbour, you can stop to brush the earth away from old mosaic floors, before crossing the narrow promontory to reach a pretty beach. The wonderful shelter of the bay provides a safe anchorage for cruising yachts and local fishing boats and a short paddle across the submerged causeway to offshore 'Rabbit Island' reveals yet more sunken ruins.

The waterfront restaurants enjoy a reputation for excellent fresh fish amongst Turks from as far away as Izmir, who come at the weekend to indulge in fine food and wine in an unbeatably romantic setting. As well as a good choice of restaurants, Gumusluk has several small grocers, a couple of craft and carpet stalls and even a fascinating antique shop.

A little larger than Gumusluk but still delightfully low-key are the seaside villages of Yalikavak and Ortakent, with their pleasant beaches surrounded by excellent walking country.
The recent inauguration of the new Bodrum airport (near Milas and thus out of earshot from our properties) has made the passage to this region of Turkey much easier, but even before that the Bodrum Peninsula has been a long-standing favourite with Turkey's wealthy elite, with the result that some of the most luxurious holiday homes in the country can be found here.
