In the early morning sunlight, the flooded caves of Malta's Blue Grotto turn turquoise. The sub-tropical plants in St Anton Gardens scent the air with their exotic perfumes. The 16th century fortified city of Valletta is the old capital, and is the home of the magnificent Grand Harbour, St John's Co-Cathedral and the medieval Auberges of the Knights of St John. Early Christian catacombs are to be found in Rabat. The beautiful, medieval fortress town of Mdina, the silent city, sits on a hilltop.
Little farming villages are scattered around the landscape. Each celebrates the feast day of its particular patron saint. These lively and animated festi take place throughout the summer - villages are decorated with banners and lights, food stalls line the streets and firework displays are accompanied by bells and brass bands.
The clear, unpolluted waters of the Mediterranean are wonderful for
scuba-diving and snorkelling.
Glass figures from Mdina, silver filigree jewellery, lace and hand-knitted clothing are all good buys.
Bars and restaurants are lively. Local cuisine includes a macaroni, cheese and egg pie called timpana, spicy beef rolls called bragioli, lampuka fish and swordfish. Locally produced drinks include Cisk and Hopleaf beers, and the refreshing Kinnie, made from oranges and herbs.
